The Fine Arts of NEM

Who is NEM?

pronoun: slang for "and them" or "others" that aren't present. usually added after a person's name to imply that the subject is accompanied by other people - The Urban Dictionary.

Van Gogh, Picasso, Frida, Basquiat and NEM' are legendary visual artists in global fine art history.

The African Diaspora has inspired a new Black Fine Arts Renaissance that is currently developing worldwide. (I often include myself, living artists and the Harlem Renaissance = NEM) in this group of excellent artists. Because we were already creating Afrocentric clothing, food, dance and fine arts within our communities.

Unfortunately, racist discrimination prevented many Black African American Visual Artists from having the same financial resources, museum exhibits, gallery representation and social popularity as other visual artists back then. Now, visual artists are able to use social media technology to reach a larger audience of people living in different countries to expand their fine arts businesses.

Black Women are also building successful art careers, despite the obstacles. They are making a real effort to turn their creative ideas into a visual reality. We are writing, singing, acting, dancing, painting and sharing our own personal stories straight from the heart and into our fine art. "As we See it, As we Know it, As we are currently Living it...We are building up our legacies Everyday!"

As a Black Woman, I decided to navigate my journey into the “art world” from a different perspective. Starting with redefining my own viewpoint of what, when, were and who I am as a Fine Arts Visionary from the Pacific Northwest

It was also necessary for me to rediscover my creative talents, apart from the typical art subjects that are traditionally taught in BFA and MFA academic programs. I chose a visual arts education program that encouraged me to produce modern contemporary fine art according to my own whimsical eccentric style.

My personal journey into the art world officially started in 2014, with a vision to explore, design, create, build and establish my own fine arts portfolio. This journey has literally become a full circle adventure back to the same historically Black Central District neighborhood where it originally started.

Shurvon Alicia is a Fine Arts Visionary from Seattle with a plan to fulfill her black art fashion designer dreams. There were several obstacles to navigate as she entered the art world, similar to climbing a mountain.

“We as Black African American Visual Artists have many different types of obstacles to conquer while living our best life. We have to continuously rebuild our strength and stand firm in our faith every day in an effort to believe in our creative vision. Therefore, it is important for us to uplift and encourage each other as artists, because we BeDazzle the Whole Fine Arts World!!!!”

When she reached the horizon, she realized that she was not alone in her quest to understand the art world.

Shurvon collaborated with Julius Brandon to form JuVon Designs in 2015. Together they completed several art projects that included jewelry, poetry, videos, published sketchbooks, art workshops and The Wonderful World of Fine Arts Radio Show on the Rainier Avenue Radio Station.

Their new limited edition artwork can be seen at the Festival Sundiata Black Art Show at the Seattle Center this Summer.
